Photo ID, please!

The Supreme Court is hearing a case this fall about whether or not a state can mandate that voters show photo IDs at the polls. This brings up a number of issues..... What are these issues? What do you think about this concept?

I think that it would be a great idea although it would almost be the same thing as a pole tax because the voters that don't have enough money would need to get an idea and that would become difficult. then there is the side that says that if you cant pay to have an idea then you shouldn't be voting anyway so i am torn although i still think it should be put into place.

I guess I understand how this may discriminate against those who don't have an ID card. However, shouldn't people be tax payers in order to vote? and if the have the money to pay taxes, shouldn't they have money for an ID? Just a thought... Identification is necessary for holding a job and a countless number of other things, so it should be acceptable, if not expected, for everyone to have one. Prevention of fraud would definitely improve with ID's so in no way is this an unreasonable request.

I agree with both of the comments above me. Although I don't believe it's like a poll tax because it's not really a discrimination thing in my eyes. I think it's for safety and fraud issues more than discriminating against those who can't pay for a $10 or so state ID. Even still, I don't think it's necessary to do. I think the government should be able to trust us by now, fraud has been decreasing for over a hundred years and voting is voting. We're all allowed to vote, we shouldn't need to show a terrible photo ID to prove it.

Even though this sounds like it shouldn't be a problem, there are face id's out there and people could still get past this if for some reason they felt so inclined to spend a bunch of money to vote. So i think its pointless anyways. A signature i think is the best way you can see if someone is for real

I think it is a good idea to have a photo ID shown when voting. It is very good for safety. In class, it was mentioned, if someone died, how could you stop someone from walking in and pretending that they are the person who passed away? Having a photo ID would prove a lot and keep fraud from
happening. Though I do agree with "jpo" with the fact that those who don't have an ID would be at loss, but its not a discrimantory thing. Although,
voting has decreased significantly anyways, (30%), so what would be the point of making it more difficult to vote? We need the polls and the public opinion, so though i beleive photo ID's are a good idea, I might be torn to say that if someone wants to vote, just let them vote.

I understand and agree with most of the comments made before, but I don't think that asking someone to show their ID is asking too much. People can easily forge signatures, and as "cyaffe" mentioned dead people are voting now. People are coming in and pretending to be dead people, just to get more votes in. Yes, fraud has decreased over the years, but there will always be people out there that will do whatever it takes to cheat the system. For those that don't have IDs, I think there should be some system or place where they can go and apply for one. I know this process could take too much time, but there has to be some way these people can get IDs too.

i think it makes sense in theory, to prevent fraud, etc. but if there are people who can't afford to get an ID, then they should have a different registration, like maybe they register the day before by calling or something to verify when they'll be there and that they don't need to bring in an actual ID.

I think that it is a smart idea to have a person present his or her photo id. To recieve an id should not be that expensive, and if it is then there should be some way for people who cannot afford one to recieve one. Voter fraud can be done very easily and presenting an id would help stop this, yet i doubt that there would be many people who would want to "stick it to the man" and vote over and over. A precaution is a precaution and it really would not do much harm to show a photo id to vote, it's like everything else we do whether it's at school or in the real world, showing an id is a precaution to make sure we are who we say we are.
