The State of Our Union

Welcome to another school year, and of course, a big welcome to the new crop of AP Gov't students. (alumni still welcome!)

We have a lot of things going on in our country and our world right now... midterm elections coming up, a president with low approval ratings, more people know who Homer Simpson is than Tony Blair, etc. What concerns you? Which issues are you thinking about and bothered by?

I got a political poll call the other night... one of the questions was - as a nation, are we going in the right direction, or are we on the wrong track?

Any thoughts on that?

Vinay - no worries on a longer blog - it was great to hear what you have to say!

I think that candidates really struggle concerning how they are portrayed. We will soon be watching "Journeys with George," which is a documentary about the 2000 campaign. You will see W in a very informal light in the beginning of the campaign, and then as it looks like he might actually win the election, he becomes more serious - often quite awkwardly. I think you will find it interesting. There is also a lot of criticism when W is less formal, and people claim he acts like a cowboy. In fact, I just saw a bumper sticker this morning that said "Yee Haw Isn't a Foreign Policy." So it seems to be a really complicated issue.... lots to think about!
